I was in a taxi van minding my business when I saw a young girl (about 3 or 4 years old) run across the road. The taxi driver didn't see her and she hit the front of the van and flew about 5 feet. I felt the impact and reacted as if I felt bad for her to the woman next to me. She laughed. I couldn't believe that she didn't react the same way I did. The girl's father (I assume) ran across the road to pick her up. She was crying and some blood came out of her mouth. Traffic was stopped on both sides and everyone got out of their cars to assist if needed. The driver told the father to get in the van with the girl to go to the hospital but the girl screamed bloody murder so he got out and back in after she calmed down a bit. Then the van drove off to go to the hospital. My stop was between the hospital and the accident site so I tried to figure out if it would be appropriate to get off or would the van go to the hospital then back to resume its route. I asked the woman next to me and she said it would be ok to stop so I got off. I am sure the girl would be ok.
I couldn't believe what I witnessed, and how the people reacted to the accident. I guess it happens often enough here with the houses being so close to the road. Luckily the speed limit is 25 for this area of the island.
I have had a few close calls myself when I first arrived. I have learned to let taxi cars go and to go around the cars so I would not be hit.
